Defensive lineman Jadeveon Clowney revealed that he re-signed with the Cleveland Browns because of quarterback Deshaun Watson.
Jadeaveon Clowney was one of the later free agency signings in the 2022 league year. Ultimately, he chose to re-sign with the Cleveland Browns on a one-year, $10 million contract. But what was one of the main factors in his decision to reunite with the Browns?
While speaking with the media on Thursday, June 16, Clowney said what drove him to sign a one-year contract with the team was their trade for former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson. In fact, Clowney said that he was going to sign with whichever team acquired Watson, bringing up the Atlanta Falcons as an example.
Jadeveon Clowney cites Deshaun Watson trade as reason for re-signing with Browns
Clowney and Watson were teammates for two seasons. From the time Watson was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft until Clowney was traded to the Seattle Seahawks prior to the 2019 season.
Among the teams involved in trade discussions for Watson included the Browns, Falcons, Carolina Panthers and New Orleans Saints.
Even with allegations of sexual misconduct surrounding Watson, the Browns surrendered a gigantic package of draft capital to the Texans. Not only that, but the team decided to give him a five-year, $230 million contract that is fully guaranteed. The move has been criticized, considering he is still dealing with over 20 civil lawsuits.
A recent bombshell report by the New York Times revealed that Watson received massages from at least 66 different women in the span of 17 months, where he “engaged in more questionable behavior than previously known.”
Watson is still subject to punishment by the NFL, where he could miss a portion of the 2022 season by way of a suspension.
Clowney is back with the Browns, and he credits the team acquiring Watson as a reason why a deal was struck.
