Cutjar and Plewes take Ironman World Championship titles in St. George

There were two Canadians who finished on top of the podium in their age group at Saturday’s Ironman World Championship St. George – Jameson Plewes from Brandon, Manitoba won the men’s 18 to 24 age group, while Penticton’s Kevin Cutjar won the men’s 55 to 59 category.

Originally from Australia, Cutjar moved to Penticton in 1994 and would eventually become a pro triathlete. In 2005 he took three top-10 finishes at Ironman races (sixth at Ironman Coeur d’Alene and Canada, ninth at Ironman Western Australia). He won the Ultraman World Championship in Hawaii and would also go on to win Ultraman Canada in 2010. Now Cutjar can add an age group Ironman world championship to his impressive resume. His time was 10:23:11.

Plewes qualified for the world championship event in St. George by winning his age group at Ironman Coeur d’Alene. He went 9:24:18 to win his age group on Saturday.

Athletes competing at the race on the weekend ranged in ages from 18 to 79, with over 2,800 athletes starting the race. Officially this was the 2021 Ironman World Championship, held in St. George to make up for the cancellation of last October’s race in Hawaii. The race returns to Kailua-Kona in October for the 2022 edition.

The challenging course in St. George saw only 78.1 per cent of the competitors finish the race.
